The metal work at the Vanderbilt is incredible, The elegant ironwork was created by Samuel Yellin, the foremost iron artisan of his day.
The Habitat with its nine wild-animal and marine-life dioramas was created by artisans from the American Museum of Natural History.
Did you know this estate was built in stages between 1910 and 1936.? A true Gold Coast gem! 🏡💛William Vanderbilt realized the potential for his sprawling estate to become a museum “for the use, education and enjoyment of the general public.”it was deeded to Suffolk County, New York, upon William K. Vanderbilt II’s death in 1944. The county opened the museum to the public in 1950.

What’s your Favorite historic spot on Long Island?
The Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is the largest astronomical facility on Long Island. The Planetarium’s GeminiStar III system – which includes a Konica Minolta Infinium-L star projector, full-dome video and surround-sound – offers audiences a spectacular immersive experience. I attended the narrated night sky show, it was fabulous. I highly recommend it!
I’m planning on returning to see more
- the Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition by Wendy Klemperer: Wrought Taxonomies- I cannot wait, I would have stayed longer today, though it was freezing so we really only toured the inside of the museum. Im obsessed with outdoor sculpture art!
- The Vanderbilt grounds are perfect for Wedding Day photos! The 43 acre estate hosts wedding parties and gives 2 hour access to the following photo sites, I will post photos here of the gorgeous locations. you can also schedule these same locations for private photo shoots, including engagement, maternity and family portraiture!
