Dezy Strong

This week has been incredibly difficult, to say the least. The tragic loss of nine lives in Kobe Bryant’s helicopter accident, the heartbreaking local incident involving the preventable death of a young boy, and the personal loss of Matt (Dezy) have left my heart heavy. When we experience hardships ourselves, we often find ways to cope and handle it on our own. But when it affects the people we love deeply, it’s an indescribable feeling of helplessness and emptiness, especially when it involves the loss of a loved one. There’s no sugarcoating it – it simply sucks. It’s a challenging and painful experience for everyone involved, and it’s something we cannot change. All we can do is go through it.

In times like these, faith in God has always been a source of strength for me. Human life is fragile, and we may never have all the answers, but trusting in God’s plan can help heal our wounds. It often allows us to find glimpses of light amidst the darkness.

This week, one of my dearest friends lost her husband to cancer. It’s devastating to witness the toll this awful disease takes on lives. Why haven’t we found a cure yet? When I lost my father to cancer 17 years ago, I had hoped that by now, we would have made significant progress. Cancer doesn’t discriminate based on age, family, or the good we do in the world – it’s a merciless monster. I pray fervently that we discover a cure soon. If anyone has information on organizations making a difference in the fight against cancer, please share them in the comments.

Now, let’s talk about Matt. He was a radiant soul who brightened any room he entered. His infectious laughter, captivating smile, and incredible sense of humor brought joy to everyone around him. Those who had the privilege of knowing him loved him dearly. Personally, he transformed my perspective on life. His foundation, dezystrong.org, embodies his unwavering determination to fight cancer not only for his family but for others as well. He was an advocate for living life to the fullest, reminding us all that tomorrow is uncertain. His motto, “We Get To,” resonated with countless people and left a lasting impact.

Jennifer, I want you to know that I love you deeply. May you find solace in the midst of darkness. I am truly sorry for your loss, and I will always be here for you and your family. Sending you big, warm hugs.

During the summer, I had the privilege of capturing some beautiful moments of your family, even after Matt’s diagnosis. I hope that these images bring you joy and serve as a reminder of the love and happiness you shared, even through tears.

With all my love,

Jennifer
